I have been using Google's web-based tools for mail and calendar (particularly as I have been away for much of the last month). I think I am going to switch over to using the Google calendar as my primary calendar and Google mail as my primary mail. Here's why:

Google has a very nice desktop app called Google Notifier. (this links to the Mac version. I am sure there are comparable programs for the PC). The calendar notifier has an icon that sits in the upper right hand corner of my tool bar and let's me know how many upcoming events I have over the next couple of days. The mail notifier shows me the unread messages in my inbox and allows me to see an abbreviated view of my latest messages and compose mail from this icon. These are proving to be much better to use than Mac Mail and iCal.
